The Schemes
Motability is an independent not-for-profit organisation, which provides mobility solutions for disabled people.

How the Motability Scheme works
There are two main ways in which Motability can turn your mobility
allowance into the travel solution for your needs.

  • A new car on a three-year contract hire lease.
  • A new or used car on hire purchase, over a term of two to five years.

Most of our customers choose contract hire as they find it's the best option to obtain and pay for a brand new car. They like the convenience of a single, regular payment that includes comprehensive insurance, maintenance and breakdown cover.

If you would like to receive any publications relating to the Car Scheme, please contact John Blackwell or Lee Oliver on: 01622 755531

Motoring means independence
It means the freedom to come and go, to shop, to work, to get the kids to school. It means staying in touch, making a difference - and getting more out of life.

Using your allowance to pay for a new car is an important choice for the life you plan to lead.

And Motability is your perfect motoring partner. For thousands of people with disabilities, and their families, it's the key to trouble-free motoring.

We take care of the practicalities, including -

  • a single, regular payment which includes insurance, maintenance and roadside recovery
  • routine servicing at no extra cost
  • a unique Customer Services helpline

- so you can enjoy the freedom of the road.

Your mobility benefit can go a long way - Contract hire means worry-free motoring
Most Motability customers choose contract hire as the best way to obtain and pay for their car. Contract hire offers worry-free motoring and the convenience of a single, regular payment that includes insurance, maintenance and roadside recovery.

Your contract hire lease has been developed through our long experience with millions of Motability customers. It comes with peace of mind built in.

Once Motability accepts your application, the advance payment and weekly rental are price protected. This lasts for three months from the date your agreement is printed - provided that the car description on the agreement is not altered later.

Your contract hire lease price, which will vary according to the make and model you choose, includes:

  • Comprehensive insurance cover provided by Royal & SunAlliance 'Motability' (R&SAM).
  • Full breakdown assistance provided by the RAC.
  • Servicing, maintenance, and repairs - which you must arrange through a Motability dealer - at no extra charge to you.
  • An allowance of 60,000 miles over the three years of your agreement (Additional miles in excess of 60,000 are charged at 5p per mile at the end of the three-year lease period.)
  • If you choose optional extras that aren't fitted as standard to your chosen car - such as a CD player - they can not be included in the lease cost. You must have them fitted by your supplying dealer and pay for them yourself.

Your budget is straightforward

  • You agree to pay all, or part, of your allowance to us throughout the contract.
  • You pay an advance payment if the car you have chosen costs more than is covered by your allowance.
  • You pay for fuel, oil and consumables (such as washer fluid) not included in the regular servicing and maintenance.
  • You pay any fines such as parking and speeding.
  • You pay the first £75 of any insurance claim, whether it was your fault or not. This is called insurance excess. (Some categories of drivers may have to pay more). If an insured third party was at fault, this excess will be refunded.

Contract hire is flexible and affordable

Making savings on smaller cars
Some smaller, less expensive cars don't take up the whole of your allowance.

Payments, deducted from your allowance, are made to us at four weekly intervals. The balance of the allowance is paid to you. If the allowance increases during the agreement, you also receive the increase.

The price guide shows those cars which offer you a saving.

Using the whole of your allowance
Most Motability customers use the whole of their allowance to lease a car. Your allowance is paid directly to us at four weekly intervals. With this type of agreement, if the Government increases the allowance during your agreement, we receive the increase and not you. This is because likely rises in the allowance are built into the lease cost from the start.

Completing the Motability application
Once you have decided on your car, the Motability specialist at your chosen, accredited dealer will complete the application form with you.

You will need to provide the dealer with:

  • your driving licence and award entitlement notice.
  • driving licences for other named drivers - must be present at the time of application.
  • details of any previous accidents and driving convictions that you, or your named drivers, may have.
  • VED exemption certificate if applicable.

When the paperwork is complete simply sign the declaration on the application form. John Blackwell will then send your application and other paperwork to us for processing.
